Power

Real power, the power that heals and transforms lives and communities, streams forth from God

Power

In order to release that kind of power and to see it work, we have only one responsibility - and that is to get out of the way! But before we dive in and see exactly how we can “get out of the way” and release the power of God into our own lives and into the lives of others, let us look more closely at the meaning of the word “power.” In all instances, power is the ability to move, withhold, suppress, oppress, create, change, uphold, and elevate things at an organic, inorganic, or psychological level.

Everything in existence has its origin in spiritual power: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). The gospel of John makes it clear that “God is Spirit” (John 4:24). Therefore, we know that the parent force of all creation is spiritual power.

Every inch of creation reveals wonders that far transcend the ability of the human mind to fully comprehend.

The power of the Spirit of God is the source of everything. It is the uncaused cause, and therefore it can never be nullified. It is supreme over every other power. It is all-encompassing in might (omnipotence), in infinity (omnipresence), and in knowledge and wisdom (omniscience). It is eternal. It is creative, life-giving, and always renewing. It is righteous and perfect in every respect. It cannot be sullied, violated, or diminished in any way, by any other agent or power.

It is invisible, and yet it manifests in visible ways. This is the supreme power that created everything. Every inch of creation reveals wonders that far transcend the ability of the human mind to fully comprehend. The awesome power of God who is the designer, creator, and sustainer of it all - the God who counts the hairs on our head, and who does not lose sight of the smallest sparrow.

Who or what can bridge the invisible, quantum realm and the visible?

The question now is: Who or what can enable significant change to happen in our material world and circumstances? Who or what can bridge the invisible (the quantum realm) and the visible, the intangible and the tangible - and hold them all together under one source of control?

To answer that question, we must refer back to the non-measurable “something” that imparted power to the quantum field in the first place. That is the omnipresent Christ. “For God had allowed us to know the secret of his plan, and it is this: he purposes in his sovereign will that all human history shall be consummated in Christ, that everything that exists in Heaven or earth shall find its perfection and fulfilment in him” (Eph. 1:9–10, PHILLIPS).

From Christ flows the “tremendous power” of Ephesians 1:19. The same power that created the universe, that took on human flesh as Jesus of Nazareth, healed all kinds of diseases, raised the dead, and controlled the elements. The very same power “which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead” and “put all things under His feet” (Eph.1:20, 22). This is the power of resurrection and renewal.

In order to banish all trace of separation, and to restore full relationship with human beings, God entered into a seemingly impossible contradiction, or paradox: He came to earth as both man and as God. What is more, He arrived on earth embodying two equally balanced opposites. He was not just partially man and mostly God. No, He was fully man and fully God.

The awesome power that created the quantum field and brought the universe into manifestation all flowed from God the Father through Christ, who is “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being” (Heb. 1:3, NIV). Christ was in the beginning with God, and all things were constituted in Him: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him” (Col. 1:16, NIV). Christ was, and is, supreme in power, in authority, in righteousness, in purity, in justice, in wisdom, in knowledge, in creativity, and in love. He is described in Scripture as the “only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords” (1 Tim. 6:15, NIV) and as “God, our Saviour... All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time!” (Jude 1:25, NLT).

It is the power of love that led the Christ to become incarnate as a human being, in order to save humankind and to reconcile the human race back to God the Father.

Christ exercises His power in myriad ways at myriad levels, but there are three particular moments in time when His power was manifest in the most supreme ways. The first was (is) the point of creation itself, when the universe and everything in it came into existence. The second was (is) the demolition, on the cross, of the entire fallen world order and everyone and everything in it which was not the handiwork of God. The third was (is) His resurrection from the dead and, simultaneously, the ushering in of a completely new creation, the kingdom of God, which is permeated and governed by the word of the Lord.

It is the power of love that led Christ - the maker of heaven and earth - to become incarnate as a human being, in order to save humankind and to reconcile the human race back to God the Father.

Jesus’ primary purpose in coming to earth was to redeem the human race. The second purpose was the establishment of the kingdom of God on earth, as in heaven, which could not make its entry unless and until every iota of debt - meaning every obstacle to love - had been paid off and removed. That final payment was made upon Calvary. A further purpose that Jesus accomplished was to demonstrate how to live the fulfilled and empowered life that God intended the human race to live. He modelled for us how to obtain access to the wondrous power that He demonstrated during His life on earth. Jesus sums up the essence of this model in His words: “I can do nothing on my own initiative or authority” (John 5:30, AMP).

Jesus said that He could do nothing by Himself - no demonstrations of healing, no words of wisdom and encouragement, no power at all to carry out His God-given mission. Therefore, how much more do we need to understand that, by ourselves, neither do we have the power to accomplish that which God has called us to do! Realising our weakness and emptiness is a vital step towards gaining access to the power of God.

God’s power in us in based upon Oneness

Ever since the Holy Spirit was spread abroad after the ascension of Jesus Christ, God’s power has been based upon the quality of Oneness. Jesus prayed this prayer for all believers before He went to His death: “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us… that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me” (John 17:21–23).

God’s power is fully present and operative in one divine source, and yet it expresses itself in an infinity of manifestations. To the limited human eye those manifestations seem to be separate, but they are not separate. They share one nature, in the same way that water, steam, frost, hail, and ice share the same nature. They look very different, their behaviours are different, and the impacts they make are very different—but their essence is uniform. Without that essential substance, those multiple manifestations could not exist.

And so it is with us! For example, our eyes may see one friend struggling with disease, and another in radiant health. The essential essence of both friends is the same: at the invisible, quantum level they are BOTH radiant with the presence and constant inflow of Holy Spirit; although they may look very different on the surface. However, Jesus gives us a powerful key to unlock the underlying truth. He says, “You must not judge by the appearance of things but by the reality!” (John 7:24, PHILLIPS). In other words, we are called to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7). The more we follow His guidance and focus not on the appearance but set our hearts to seek reality, the more the invisible realm (the Kingdom of God) will start emerging in our experience as healings and transformation!
